Oxford stag do guide

Oxford is great if you are looking for

  • A historic city renowned for its local ale and hearty pubs

  • Buzzy nightlife scene - sports pubs, beer gardens, and lively clubs galore

  • Brilliant daytime stag activities ranging from rage buggies to axe throwing

It’s little wonder this historic university city attracts so many tourists every year, given its magnificent architecture and close proximity to London. But as a stag do destination, Oxford tends to stay under the radar. And while we think it deserves more of a reputation, we also like the fact that when one of our stag groups chooses the ‘city of dreaming spires’, they’re discovering one of England’s best-kept stag secrets.

Whether or not your uni days are a distant memory, or never happened at all, you simply can’t fail to embrace the student mentality and have a lovely, lazy, drunken time in this beautiful city situated on the banks of the River Thames. Alternatively, we offer an array of awesome Oxford stag do activities for groups seeking adrenaline, sophistication or rampant silliness, and there’s a superb range of pubs, restaurants, bars and nightclubs for the evenings to boot. We know that Oxford has a posh reputation, but don't fret; tuxedos, top hats and tails are entirely optional. Our stag do guide to Oxford has all the details you need for a top weekend.

Getting around

Heading to Oxford

Reaching your Oxford stag do is a breeze, as the city is just an hour from London by train. As a matter of fact, rail is definitely the best way to get here as the city centre is not that car-friendly: there are multiple (rather baffling) one-way systems and not much parking. That said, if some of the group do need to drive, there are a few public car parks such as the one on Oxpens Road - expect to pay around £25 for 24 hours and note that it's strictly cashless so you'll need to pay digitally. Alternatively, note that we can also offer a selection of Oxford stag hotels with parking

Exploring The City

Once you're arrived in the city, you won’t need cars to get about. The main centre is compact and walkable, and almost flat, so a lot of our groups opt to move around on foot, or you might like to join the many resident cyclists and consider hiring bikes to get around. Dockless cycle hire is available on a self-service basis 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from various hub locations across the city. The many spectacular works of architecture here make it a city worth taking your time to explore. There’s also a good bus network should you need it, and plenty of taxis for getting back to your hotel safely, late at night.

Tips and ideas

The Best Stag Do Ideas in Oxford

1. Paintballing

Make Oxford your destination for the ultimate paintball showdown! You’ll all head to an epic site in the woods that features multiple game arenas. Look forward to the likes of secret hideaways, dens and various structures, along with war torn battle zones. You’ll be equipped with all the gear and a safety briefing, before you and the rest of the boys are let loose! This fast paced experience is less about military strategy and more about dodging shots and ambushing your mates with colourful ammo! To top it all off, 100 paintballs each are also included, so what are you waiting for? Leave no groomsmen unscathed!

2. Off Road Go Karting

It’s time for the dirtiest ride of your life, because with these off road go karts, you’ll get absolutely covered in mud! With this one, we’ll send you and the rest of the stags into the great outdoors, where you’ll hop in roll cages with engines. You’ll then tear it up on an open track, navigating your way through a copious amount of mud! Expect to feel every lump and bump, as these beastly vehicles are super close to the ground; but don’t worry, the safety harness will keep you firmly inside the kart. So there’s just one thing for it - put your foot down and have a cracking time on this awesome, open track!

3. Bubble Football

For pure hilarity in Oxford, you’ve got to get a session of bubble football sorted. This side-splitting activity is one that’s not to be missed and is great fun for everyone; whether you’re a fan of the beautiful game or not. Just imagine you and the rest of the stags encased in giant zorbs, leaving just your legs to run free (what an absolute sight!). You’ll get stuck into several different games that will see you bump, crash and roll! With this brilliant activity, the groom's dribbling skills will be as questionable as his choice of wedding hashtags!

4. Clay Pigeon Shooting

Let the stag blow off some pre-wedding steam with an exhilarating clay pigeon shooting experience in Oxford. With your rifles at the ready, you’ll take aim, ready to hit those clay as they whizz through the sky. But hold your horses, you’ll have to have a safety briefing first, where your instructor will teach you the basics and run through those all important do’s and don’ts. Don’t go in too cocky, because this one’s harder than it looks. You’ll need a steady hand and decent precision with this one. Ready to see who can blast the most clays? You’ll have to get this one booked to find out!

5. Bourbon Tasting

Add a little sophistication to your Oxford stag do with this brilliant Bourbon tasting experience. Bourbon is the drink of champs, and during this session, you’ll learn everything there is to know about this tasty spirit. Hosted by a friendly and passionate Bourbon connoisseur, you’ll be treated to various samples and will learn to tell the difference between a ‘straight’, ‘blended’ and ‘aged’ Bourbon. It’s the perfect way to take some time out from the partying and the more action-packed adventures and enjoy a bit of civilised bonding with the group.

6. Pub Crawl

The best way to familiarise yourself with a new city is by taking part in a pub crawl of course! And here in Oxford, you’re in luck, because we’ve got some of the greatest pub crawls  around! But if you’re looking to add an extra bit of fun to your evening, then how about opting for our Bar Crawl Bunnies or Bar Crawl Beauties experiences? Your guides for the evening will be some bubbly, party loving ladies, who just ooze glam! They’ll take you on a tour of the city’s top boozers, with a nightclub drop off at the end of the night. Expect a great mix of late night venues, with something that every group will love. There will even be some hilarious games and forfeits included with these bar crawls, just to amp up the laughs!

7. Restaurants

One thing that you’ll absolutely want to get sorted for the Oxford stag do is a decent meal. We’d always recommend getting a restaurant booked in advance of your big weekend - not only does it save traipsing around looking for somewhere, but it also guarantees that you and your group have somewhere to go. Not all restaurants will be able to accommodate large stag groups at short notice, so get ahead of the game by adding a restaurant reservation to your itinerary. Plus we’ve got some great options that everyone will love. How about a proper feast at Byron Burgers, where you’ll start off with tasty appetisers, before digging into a succulent burger and crispy fries. If that’s not enough, you’ll each get an ice-cold pint to wash it all down with. If pub grub’s more your thing, then we also offer a two course meal at The Slug and Lettuce too.

8. Comedy Club

Dive headfirst into the world of comedy with a trip to one of Oxford’s best comedy clubs! It’s the perfect antidote to calm any wedding nerves and is an epic way to begin your night. Get ready for some of the brightest performers from the comedy circuit, who’ve got a whole load of side-splitting ammo; expect witty punchlines along with hilarious anecdotes that will have you all crying with laughter. Here, the atmosphere is vibrant, but laid-back, so you’ll know you’ll be in for one seriously good night. It’s time to leave those formalities at the door, because Oxford’s comedy scene is your ticket to a brilliant evening of pure, unadulterated laughs.

9. Quad Bike Trekking

No stag do is complete without a bit of quad biking, and what better place to do so than in Oxford’s stunning countryside? This activity is something that the whole group can get on board with and promises a gloriously muddy adventure. Your quad bike trek will be hosted by an experienced instructor, who will run through all the safety stuff with you, before getting you kitted out and hooked up with your bikes. You’ll be using full sized, automatic bikes, which will be perfect for navigating dips, mounds, twists, turns and other obstacles! It’s massive amounts of fun and there’s no better way to spend some time with your mates than riding some epic bikes through muddy tracks!

10. Nightclub Entry

Don’t let the good times come to an end once you’ve finished up at the pubs! Head to one of Oxford’s top nightclubs and keep the drinks coming as you party your way into the small hours. Whether you’re after cheesy tunes, floorfillers or all the latest chart, one of these late night venues is sure to be your jam. Now, it’s time to let those ridiculous dance moves out and make your night one for the history books.

Other Stag Do Tips

It may not be as well-known a stag do destination as some other cities around the UK, but you definitely won’t be bored in Oxford. And don’t be put off by the air of academia here either - the city has its wild side too. As we've highlighted above, there's loads of great, action packed activities on offer here where adventure lovers will get their kicks, but there's also plenty for those groups looking to take things a little bit easier. You could take a tour of the Oxford Artisan Distillery for instance, to learn how they make their superb range of whiskies, gins and vodka. We're confident you'll manage to fit in a few cheeky tastings too.

Or - something we’d definitely recommend on a sunny afternoon - how about a spot of Punting on the River Cherwell? At the Magdalen Bridge Boathouse you can hire traditionally crafted vessels to pilot yourselves, or chauffeured punts if you’d prefer to take it easy. Pull in at the Victoria Arms for a couple of beers along the way - it’s situated on the riverbank in Old Marston and boasts one of the best beer gardens in Oxford. The Perch in Binsey Village is another good bet for a refreshing pint or two. It's a historic building with a beautiful backdrop, serving excellent British pub grub inspired by traditional favourites with seasonal variations.

Lastly, if you have a few hours spare one morning, then why not just walk around a little. Oxford is one of England’s most beautiful cities, with some majestic architecture including the Radcliffe Camera and the Bridge of Sighs, two significant landmarks. Oxford of course has also been used as a filming location many times - any Harry Potter fans in your group may spot a few famous sites which will make for great group selfies to pop on your social feed.

Nightlife

You could be forgiven for thinking that a night out in Oxford would be on the quiet side. Compared to much larger cities with more reputation for stag parties, you would, of course, be correct. But Oxford is a bit of a hidden gem, with lots of charming old pubs and stylish bars, which come with the territory when you consider that its university is the oldest in the UK. Students like to relax with a few drinks in the evenings (and afternoons - and mornings, actually) so the city’s nightlife scene has evolved to cater for them.

Restaurants and Live Music

One of the most popular areas of Oxford for stag groups when it comes to eating and drinking, is Cowley Road. There are loads of bustling bars and live music venues here, including the O2 Academy and the Bullingdon Club (not that one!) If you fancy catching some live music, one of the best places to see up-and-coming bands in Oxford is the famous Jericho Tavern, where Radiohead (then known as On a Friday), played their very first gig. You can get food here, and also enjoy a few pints in one of the city centre’s largest beer gardens. Is your footy team in action over the weekend? Head to O’Neill’s, which is one of the best sports pubs in Oxford, to ensure you don’t miss any of the goals.

Cocktail Bars

Oxford has some very stylish cocktail bars for groups looking for a few rounds of early evening sharpeners. The Alchemist in the Westgate Centre is a seriously cool place, with bartenders and chefs showing an obsessive quest for perfection with their drinks and food. Freud, on Walton Street, is open until the early hours of the morning on weekends. It's a very popular student hangout, as is the Varsity Club, which has a legendary dancefloor and a stunning roof terrace with incredible views across the city of dreaming spires. At the latter venue, booking ahead for a table is highly recommended.

Nightclubs

If you’re looking to finish the evening by throwing some dodgy shapes on the dancefloor, then beside Oxford has a handful of ace stag-friendly nightclubs. These include the Bridge, with five different zones, three dancefloors and three bars, serving up everything from techno and deep house, to R&B and classic dance anthems. ATIK is another stag favourite, a buzzy sprawling venue with a 1,200 crowd capacity, that attracts big-name DJs and a stylish clientele. We can sort your Nightclub Entry for you, ensuring that you and the lads can slip past the door staff with no difficulties, and avoid any hanging about in long queues.
