Chester stag do guide

Chester is great if you are looking for

  • A sophisticated city that still caters perfectly to fun-loving stag groups

  • One of the best places in the UK for white water rafting

  • Huge range of historic pubs and lively bars and clubs

The only city in the UK to have a full set of Roman walls intact, plus home to the oldest still-operating racecourse in the world. Yep, you could say that Chester is a city steeped in history, but it’s also thoroughly modern in many ways, especially when it comes to quality stag do’s.

By day on a stag weekend in Chester you should take advantage of the acres of countryside surrounding the city where you can enjoy a bolt of adrenaline with activities that include quad-biking, mud-buggies, gorge-walking and paintballing. And by night, you are in for a treat, with a super range of pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs scattered around Chester’s easily walkable city centre. Find out more with our comprehensive guide to stag do’s in Chester.

Getting around

Chester is easy to get to for your stag weekend. It’s located just 20 miles from Liverpool, and 30 miles from Manchester, making it accessible by road, rail or air. The best and most relaxed way to get to a Chester stag do is by train - for example, it takes just two hours from London, and a taxi from the train station to the city centre will set you back about a fiver.

If you’re driving, then you’ll find there are plenty of public car parks around Chester, some of them 24 hours, where you can safely leave your vehicles for the duration of your stay. You won’t need your car as standard for a Chester stag weekend, as the city itself is small and very walkable. Many previous stag groups have shared with us that they were able to get around perfectly happily on foot in Chester in the evenings, but if you're feeling lazy, or have anyone in the group who is less able to walk, there are 24-hour taxi ranks at the train station, on Princess Street, Bridge Street and Foregate Street.

Tips and ideas

Chester is the perfect location for stag groups that are looking for a weekend of adrenaline-fuelled fun. The River Dee is regarded as one of the best places in the country for White Water Rafting, while the countryside surrounding Chester is also home to a number of other action-packed experiences from Gorge Walking to Quad Biking, Paintballing and Kayaking. If you’re an active group of lads then Chester is a decent option - in fact, it might just be one of the top stag destinations in North England for your outdoorsy crew.

But don't feel pressured to go all adrenaline junky! There are also plenty of more relaxed, sophisticated activities available to you. What about a spot of Whisky and Beer Pairing to see who’s got the best nose in the group? Or perhaps you’d prefer 18 holes of Golf at one of the top courses in the area? Depending on the time of year you visit, we can also sort you and the lads out with a Day at the Races. Chester is home to the oldest operational racecourse in the world. It's hard to comprehend that it was first established back in 1539! The racecourse has consistently been awarded the Gold Standard Award by the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA), since the award’s inception in 2008 - it really is the perfect place for a cheeky flutter on the gee-gees.

If you’ve got hangovers from the night before, we recommend clearing your heads with a wander around the historic landmarks of this popular tourist city. The walk around the Roman Walls is two miles-long, while in the old town the Tudor-style Rows shopping district is very famous - many of these shops are below street-level so it feels like you’re entering a dungeon.

Just let our friendly Event Planners know what kind of thing you’re looking for, and they’ll make suggestions tailored to your interests. Everything we offer, we’ve tried and tested ourselves, so you can have confidence that our team always knows the best things to do in Chester on a stag weekend.

Nightlife

Much like York, another of our favourite stag do destinations in North England, Chester boasts a wealth of historic and attractive pubs where you and the lads can enjoy a relaxed session with some excellent ales. These include the Bear & Billet, which dates back to the mid 17th century and under whose half-timbers you can get stuck into some delicious home-cooked grub. Another way Chester is similar to York - as well as its well-preserved Roman Walls - is that the city centre is compact, so you’ll rarely need a taxi to get around at night.

Other popular drinking spots in Chester include Beer Heroes, a craft beer shop on Watergate Street with its own tap room, which is a solid choice on a sunny afternoon, and the Commonhall Social right in the centre of town. This is a laidback place, a self-proclaimed 'social hub' of the city, with what we think is one of the best beer gardens in Chester - it's a real suntrap on a summer's day. The Watergate’s Bar is a Greene King pub, which also has a decent beer garden, and is a solid option for live sports if your footy team’s in action over the weekend.

Stag do favourites in Chester that we know our groups love include Revolution (let us know if you’d like us to book you in for an evening meal here - the atmosphere is always blinding), and the Brewhouse & Kitchen on Love Street. Aaaahhh love - it's what's brought you all together in the first place for this special weekend.

Kuckoo is another joint we’re big fans of in Chester, serving up what they like to call rock ‘n’ roll cocktails. And don’t miss the Love Shack, one of Chester’s most unique venues. This cheeky tiki-style shack with a cool upstairs terrace serves up hip-hop and R&B tunes alongside cocktails and hearty snacks. Another place that several of our Chester stag groups have recommended is Alexander’s, for stand-up comedy as well as some truly excellent Sunday roasts.

Club-wise, you can’t go wrong with Fiesta Havana, which brings a little taste of Cuba to Chester. It’s open ‘til 3am on weekends, and their rum and tequila cocktails are simply sublime. Let us know if you’d like us to take the hassle out of your evening plans by arranging Fiesta Havana Entry for your group in advance - so you can walk straight up to the door staff, announce your name and avoid having to jump through any annoying hoops.

Other good bets for Chester clubs include Metronome which is a jazz bar, just a 10 minute walk awy from the University, so expect to see the local students out, and Rosie’s - where you can expect drinks deals aplenty, happy hen groups on the dancefloor, and a humungous helping of cheesy tunes. Hey, we ain’t judging.
