Oxford stag do guide

It’s little wonder this historic university city attracts so many tourists every year, given its magnificent architecture and close proximity to London. But as a stag do destination Oxford does stay under the radar. And while we think it deserves more of a reputation, we also like the fact that when one of our stag groups does make it to the ‘city of dreaming spires’ that they’re discovering one of England’s best-kept secrets.

Whether university is a distant memory for you or not, you can’t fail to have a good time here on the banks of the Thames. We have an array of awesome Oxford stag do activities for groups seeking adrenaline, sophistication or rampant silliness, and there’s a superb range of pubs, restaurants, bars and nightclubs for the evenings. And tuxedos are completely optional by the way. Our stag do guide to Oxford has all the details you need for a top weekend.

  • Stag-friendly nightlife scene: sports pubs, beer gardens, and lively clubs
  • Brilliant daytime stag activities from rage buggies to axe throwing

Getting around

Reaching your Oxford stag do is a breeze, as the city is just an hour from London by train. As a matter of fact, rail is definitely the best way to get here as the city centre is not that car-friendly: there’s a few one-way systems and not much parking. That said, if some of the group do need to drive, there are a few public car parks such as the one on Oxpens Road - expect to pay around £25 for 24 hours. Or, we can also offer a selection of Oxford stag hotels with parking

You won’t need cars during an Oxford stag do. The city centre is compact and walkable, and almost flat, so a lot of our groups do like to hire bikes to get around - this is definitely a city of cyclists. And the many spectacular works of architecture here make it a city worth taking your time getting around. There’s also a good bus network should you need it, and plenty of taxis for getting back to your hotel late at night.

For stag activities such as off-road karting that take place outside the city centre, we can organise convenient door-to-door transfers for you - no need to hang around for taxis or public transport, and no need for any members of the group to stay sober because they’re driving.

Tips and ideas

It may not be as well-known a stag do destination as other cities around the UK, but you definitely won’t be bored in Oxford. And don’t be put off by the air of academia here either - the city has its wild side too.

Our top Oxford stag do activities include Off-Road Karting (Rage Buggies) for action-packed muddy thrills, Axe-Throwing, High Ropes Courses and the madcap, ever-popular Bubble Football. If you need inspiration, talk to our Oxford stag planners and they can give you some great advice. We’ve tried every activity we sell so we can offer first-hand opinions to ensure it’s something your group will enjoy.

And for stag groups that prefer to take things a little easier, are looking for something a bit more sophisticated than throwing themselves into giant cargo nets or thrashing around muddy tracks, Oxford has plenty to appeal. You can take a tour of the Oxford Artisan Distillery for instance, to learn how they make their superb range of whiskies, gins and vodka (and get in a few cheeky tastings of course).

Or - and this is definitely something we’d recommend on a sunny weekend - how about a spot of Punting on the River Cherwell? At the Magdalen Bridge Boathouse you can hire traditionally crafted vessels to pilot yourselves, or chauffeured punts if you’d prefer to take it easy. Pull in at the Victoria Arms for a couple of beers along the way - it’s one of the best beer gardens in Oxford. The Perch Inn is another good bet for a refreshinhg pint or two - a historic place that serves some excellent pub grub too.

Lastly, if you have a few hours spare one morning then why not just walk around a little. Oxford is one of England’s most beautiful cities, with some majestic architecture including the Radcliffe Camera and the Bridge of Sighs, two significant landmarks. Oxford of course has also been used as a filming location many times - any Harry Potter fans in your group may spot a few famous sites.

You could be forgiven for thinking that a night out in Oxford would be on the quiet side. And, compared to much larger cities with more reputation for stag parties you would be right of course. But Oxford is a bit of a hidden gem, with lots of charming old pubs and stylish bars, which comes with the territory when you consider that Oxford is the oldest university in the UK. Students need to relax with a few drinks in the evenings of course and so the city’s nightlife scene has evolved to cater for them.

One of the most popular areas of Oxford for stag groups when it comes to eating and drinking on a night out is Cowley Road. There are loads of bustling bars and live music venues here including the O2 Academy and the Bullingdon Club (not that one!)

If you do fancy catching some live music, one of the best places to see bands in Oxford is the famous Jericho Tavern, where Radiohead (then known as On a Friday), played their very first gig. You can get food here, and also enjoy a few pints in one of the city centre’s largest beer gardens. Is your team in action over the weekend? Head to O’Neill’s, which is one of the best sports pubs in Oxford, to ensure you don’t miss any of the goals.

Oxford has some very stylish cocktail bars for groups looking for some early evening sharpeners. The Alchemist in the Westgate Centre is a seriously cool place, with both bartenders and chefs showing an obsessive quest for perfection with their drinks and food. Freud, on Walton Street, and open ‘til 2am on weekends, is a very popular student hangout, as is the Varsity Club, which has a dancefloor and a stunning roof terrace with incredible views across the City of Dreaming Spires - booking ahead for a table on top is highly recommended.

And if you’re looking to finish the evening off throwing some shapes on the dancefloor, then beside Varsity Oxford has a handful of ace stag-friendly nightclubs. These include the Bridge, with five different zones, three dancefloors and three bars, serving up everything from R&B to techno, House and classic dance anthems. ATIK is another stag favourite, attracting big-name DJs and a stylish crowd with a 1,200 capacity. We can sort your Nightclub Entry for you, ensuring that you and the lads slip past the door staff with no difficulties, and no hanging around in line.
