Join the growing trend of wilderness stag do’s in the UK
Snowdonia National Park might not seem the obvious choice as far as stag locations go, but we like to offer our groups something a little different. And in recent years, the concept of ‘wilderness stag weekends’ has seen a lot of interest. Just a group of lads getting away from it all in the middle of nature - man, the elements, a load of beer. Pure bliss. Plus, Snowdonia is not far from the coastal city of Bangor, where you’ll most likely be staying, which as a student locale has plenty of good pubs, bars and clubs for the evening.
And of course Snowdonia’s mountainous majesty allows for some pretty spectacular settings for your weekend activities. You can get your kicks here with all manner of outdoor activities, such as Zip World, where you can ride the fastest zip line in the world, and the choppy rapids at the white water rafting centre of the UK. Plus of course, there’s the chance to climb Snowdon itself. Find out more with our guide to Snowdonia stag do’s below.
Snowdonia may have that wilderness appeal, but it’s not remote. The region has excellent rail and road links with other parts of the UK, with Bangor the most obvious base for your stag do. Liverpool is just 90 minutes from Bangor by road or two hours by train, Manchester not much further, and London a little over three hours by rail.
If you’re driving, let us know if you need us to arrange a stag do hotel in Bangor with parking for you. The city also has a handful of secure 24-hour car parks. Although slightly limited, pre booking taxi's from your hotel to the activity location would also be an option.
Most stag groups making for Snowdonia do stay in Bangor for convenience and also so they can do the rounds of the pubs and bars in the evenings without any long transfers.
Bangor is just a 45-minute drive from Snowdon, and close to many of the other Snowdonia stag activities you’re interested in too. If climbing Snowdon is on your agenda, bear in mind it’s quietest during the week and outside school holidays. Even then however you can expect the nearby car parks to get busy. Your best bet is to park up, and use the Sherpa Bus Service which links the six main routes up Snowdon to get around.
If your Snowdonia plans involve scaling Snowdon, Wales’ highest mountain, it’s not to be underestimated. Every year mountain rescue gets hundreds of emergency calls from people who have attempted it without preparing properly and got into trouble. To ensure your Snowdonia stag do goes without a hitch, do your homework before hitting the trail.
The summit of Snowdon is 1,085m above sea level. If everyone in the group is in decent fitness and used to hill-walking then assume it will take you between three and four hours to get to the top, 20 minutes to scoff a protein bar and snap a few photos, then another couple of hours to get back down.
Stag do’s climbing Snowdon NEED to be prepared with suitable footwear, layered clothing ready for sun or shine, and enough food and water. Make sure phones are fully charged, and let someone know the route you’re taking and when you expect to be back down. If the weather forecasts are bad, think seriously about whether it’s worth the risk.
There are several routes up Snowdon, with five of them including the PYG and Miners’ Track starting from Pen Y Pass - beware, the car park is eye-wateringly expensive so get the lads into one or two cars if you can. The Llanberis Path is generally thought to be the easiest route up and is probably the one we’d recommend to stag groups. Or you can always take the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which is a scenic and relaxed way to reach the summit from Llanberis. You can always say you walked it, no-one will know.
Bear in mind too that Snowdon gets very busy during the summer months. There are loads of other superb walks around Snowdonia ranging from the leisurely to the moderate, and the more demanding. And we have stacks of adrenaline Snowdonia stag do activities too, which we’ll be happy to organise for your group.
Those with a head for heights can make for Zipworld, with two locations in Snowdonia where you can tackle some of the world’s biggest, longest, highest and fastest ziplines. Awesome fun, and with plenty of other activities available on-site too, including Europe’s highest Giant Swing.
Snowdonia is home to some of the UK’s most exhilarating white water. Across a 1.5km section of the River Tryweryn you and the boys can tackle some Grade 3 Rapids with White Water Rafting. And (depending on water levels), you can get wet and wild with a Canyoning experience, scrambling through gorges, under waterfalls and leaping off rocks into the river.
Bounce Below must be one of the most unusual stag do activities we offer anywhere, let alone in Wales. It’s a series of trampoline nets in an almost-200 year old cavern, linked together by netted bridges, tunnels and slides. Your inner child will have the time of its life.
Snowdonia is obviously famous for its mountainous peaks, but it also borders the coast, and has some lovely beaches that are perfect for airing out your heads if you’ve got hangovers. It’s possible to surf, but if your group would like Surfing Lessons, we’d recommend letting us book them for you at an inland lagoon with reliable, man-made waves.
Lastly - whatever you get up to on your Snowdonia stag, there are plenty of welcoming pubs in the region to reward your efforts with a few cheeky pints before heading back to town, many of them serving Welsh ales, or our favourite, Penderyn, Wales’ only whisky.
Respect the Peaks
If you’re planning on actually hiking up Snowdon, don’t turn up in your best white trainers. This is proper mountain territory and the weather can change from glorious sunshine to a horizontal rainstorm in about thirty seconds, so invest in a quality pair of walking boots. Even if you’re just there for the views, bring a decent waterproof jacket. There’s definitely nothing worse than being the stag who has to spend the rest of the weekend in damp jeans because you underestimated the Welsh clouds.
The Designated Driver is Key
Unlike a night out in Liverpool or Manchester, you can’t just tap and order an Uber in the middle of a national park. The activities in Snowdonia are spread out across some of the most beautiful but remote terrain in the UK. If you haven’t sorted your transport yet, make sure you’ve got a rock-solid plan for getting between the surf lagoon and the zip wires. You don’t want to be stranded on a mountain pass with no signal and a very hungry stag crew.
Embrace the "Après-Adventure"
The nightlife in Snowdonia is more about quality than quantity. You’ll find some legendary pubs in towns like Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis that are built for hikers and thrill-seekers. These spots are usually packed with people sharing stories of their day on the mountain. The atmosphere is brilliant, the local ales are top-notch, and the pub food is designed to refuel you after energetic days.
Watch Your Step When Underground
Snowdonia is famous for its massive slate mines, many of which have been turned into underground playgrounds. If you’re heading to the caverns for a trampolining or zip-lining session, listen to the instructors. It can be quite a trippy experience being hundreds of feet below the surface, but it’s also a place where you’ll want to keep your wits about you. You won’t be permitted into the venue if you or other members of the group are intoxicated.
The best nightlife in Snowdonia? Those incredible starlit skies with practically zero light pollution getting in the way.
However, if you’re looking for something a bit livelier, Bangor is the place to be. It’s not a big city, but it’s a student city, so there are plenty of good bars, pubs and restaurants around, as well as a couple of clubs.
Remember, eating isn't always cheating and so before you head out and start sinking those pints it is worth lining your stomach. The Wood fired shack restaurant on the high street serve up pizza's and snacks and with a cracking view of the Cathedral you can't go wrong. Fancy something a little spicier, then check out Bangor Tandoori Restaurant which we've heard is popular with the locals.
The Castle, opposite the Cathedral in the city centre, is a great session pub, open ‘til 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. They serve decent food and show live sports too. Bangor has a number of other good sports pubs, including Patrick’s Bar and the Mostyn Arms.
The Black Bull on the High Street is a ‘Spoons, so you know what to expect: quality pub grub at fair prices, a good range of ales, and a lively atmosphere. Look out for Penderyn behind the bar - it’s the only Welsh whisky, and a very tasty tipple it is.
If you're lucky enough to be in Bangor when the sun is shining then just a short walk away from the Black Bull is the Belle Vue Hotel which has a beer garden, with an external bar, so you don't need to go far to get the next round in.
Late-night, there’s only one place for any self-respecting stag group to head and that’s Cube. Four rooms of bangers in Bangor - dance, R&B, cheesy pop - as well as private booths for hire and VIP table service if you want to splash out a bit.

Why choose a wilderness stag do in the UK?
If you’re after a wilderness stag weekend in the UK there can be few better destinations than Snowdonia. These mountainous landscapes and the action-packed activities within them including rafting, hiking and canyoning will sort the men from the boys.
Wilderness stag do’s are all the rage right now, but of course that doesn’t mean building your own shelters and trying to survive against the elements. It just means challenging yourselves out in nature. Hiking Snowdon, or one of the other great walks around here, is a brilliant full day’s activity after which you really will have earned a session in the pub.
What’s the nightlife like on a Snowdonia stag weekend?
Most stag do's in Snowdonia choose to stay in Bangor, which is about a half hour’s drive from the national park. While there are plenty of good pubs in the park that are popular with walkers at the end of the trail, it’s Bangor you want to be considering for a night out.
Bangor is a small city, but it has a big student population, so there are plenty of good pubs around as well as the odd nightclub. It’s not Cardiff, but it’s certainly got enough decent drinking holes to last you an evening or two.
Things to do on a North Wales stag do
The obvious thing on a Snowdonia stag do is to climb Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales and, except for Ben Nevis in Scotland, the highest in the British Isles. It doesn’t require any special equipment, but it does require good fitness, the right clothing and footwear, and taking it as a serious challenge.
As well as walking in the national park, or instead of it, there are many fantastic, adrenaline-packed stag activities in Snowdonia for adventurous groups of lads. Think white water rafting or kayaking, canyoning, ziplining, caving or surfing. And we’ll be more than happy to put it all together for you, for a weekend to remember.
Do you offer Snowdonia stag do packages?
We offer a couple of excellent Snowdonia stag do packages, which include accommodation as well as a selection of the best stag activities in Snowdonia. This is an easy, great value way to get the ball rolling with your weekend, and of course if you want to add on extra activities you can do.
Is Snowdonia good for a stag do?
Absolutely. If you’re the type of group that prefers mountain bikes and white-water rafting over fancy drinks and VIP booths, it’s an unbeatable destination. It has become a massive hub for adventure sports, meaning you can pack more adrenaline into one weekend here than almost anywhere else in Europe.
What is the dress code in Snowdonia?
Leave the shiny shoes and ironed shirts at home. The dress code here is almost exclusively ‘outdoor gear.’ Most of the pubs are perfectly happy with you rocking up in your walking boots and hoodies. As long as you aren't covered in actual mountain mud, you will fit right in with the local crowd.
How do we get to the activities?
Snowdonia is vast, so you will definitely need transport. Many groups choose to drive themselves, but if you want the whole crew to stay together and enjoy a few drinks later on, it’s worth opting for a private transfer or prebooking a ride. It’s much easier than trying to navigate narrow Welsh lanes with a map that no one can read.
Are there actual clubs in Snowdonia?
No, you won't find any multi-room superclubs in the heart of the national park. The nightlife is centred around traditional pubs and great restaurants. If you really want a late-night clubbing experience, you’ll need to head toward the coastal towns like Bangor or Llandudno, but most groups find the mountain pub vibe is exactly what they’re after.
When is the best time to visit?
Late spring to early autumn is usually the sweet spot for stag crews. The weather is more reliable, and all the water-based activities like canyoning and surfing are much more enjoyable when the temperature is above freezing. If you go in the winter, be prepared for some seriously cold days and nights – however, the views of the snow-capped peaks will be world-class.
Do we need to be fit to enjoy it?
Good news, you don’t need to be an Olympic athlete to visit Snowdonia, but a basic level of fitness helps. Most of the activities, like the Zip World velocity line or the underground bounce zones, are more about bravery than physical endurance. However, if you’re planning on trekking to the summit of Snowdon, make sure the lads have at least done a bit of walking lately so you’re not leaving anyone behind!
