Volleyball is a recognised Olympic team sport and the idea is for each team to score points against another by grounding a ball on the other team's court. There are various techniques but I'm not going to bore you with those as I have something a little more interesting.
On 9th February 1895 in Massachusetts (USA), William G Morgan, a YMCA physical education director, created a new game called Mintonette (as volleyball was then known). It was based on tennis and handball. Believe it or not basketball was invented just ten miles away only four years before.
